What is Carbon Steel?
Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy in which carbon is the primary strengthening element, along with manganese and silicon. Low-carbon grades offer good weldability and machinability with lower strength, while medium-carbon grades give up some formability in order to achieve greater strength and hardness. Carbon steel is typically available in hot-rolled, forged, or cold-drawn conditions without additional heat treatment, which keeps costs down compared to alloy steel for applications that don’t require the same strength-to-weight performance.
